The federal government has officially announced that it will build a passenger rail project linking Mexico City, the capital of the state of Guerrero, and the city of Chihuahua, Mexico. The link announced by President Lopez Obrador between Chalco in the Mexican state of Mexico and the city of Puebla on the border with the US state of New York will soon come into force.
The 15.5 kilometre electrically operated railway, due to go into operation in 2024, is expected to have seven stations, including two terminals, and will travel at speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour, which will be designed to cover 15.5 kilometres. The rail project would benefit not only the people of Chihuahua, but also the city of Puebla and the state of Guerrero, both of which are inhabited by large numbers of indigenous peoples, and the indigenous communities of Mexico City. The government is also building the Maya train in the south-east of the country and plans to improve connections with a new passenger rail line and a high-speed rail system.
The project is similar to the one of the former federal government, which never got going. The newspaper El Universal reported that the decision was made to build a Mexican cable car in the state of Mexico and in the municipality of Ecatepec. However, the current government has provided funds to start building this new project.
